SEMENYIH: Former prime minister Najib Razak took no offence at being labelled “pencuriku” (“my thief”) by PKR’s deputy president Azmin Ali.

Instead, Najib good-naturedly responded to the remarks made by the economic affairs minister as the nomination day for the Semenyih by-election draws nearer.

“Azmin calling me a thief? I would say, I have stolen the rakyat’s hearts,” he told reporters after a visit to the Tesco outlet in Semenyih tonight.

Najib’s response drew resounding cheers from hundreds of people who had gathered at the premises after hearing of his impromptu visit.

Azmin had last night said that Malay voters in the state constituency would not be taken in by Najib’s “Bossku” antics compared with those in Cameron Highlands.

The Gombak MP also described Najib as “pencuriku”.

On whether he would hit the ground running in the upcoming Semenyih by-election, Najib said he would come if he is invited.

“If I am invited, I will come. Insya-Allah, I will come,” he said.

On his visit to Tesco tonight, the Pekan MP said he had been asked by the local leaders to come shopping here as well as to survey the situation.

“From the support I see tonight, Umno has won. Hopefully.

“As it is, I did not expect such an extraordinary reception from the people here.

“What we see here is that the rakyat want to be near me as a leader. Hopefully, this will translate into support, God willing,” he said.

During his shopping trip, which lasted about 30 minutes, Najib bought items such as chillies, mineral water, lychee cordial and groundnuts. Accompanying him were numerous supporters dressed in navy blue sweaters.

However, he said he was unable to check the prices of goods as there were too many people.

“But the general comments are that people are feeling the pinch from the rising price of goods,” he said.

After completing his shopping, Najib proceeded to a nearby mamak eatery, where he took selfies with Semenyih residents.
