Roger Federer laughs at Australian Open fan as John McEnroe makes Rafael Nadal

Federer, the defending champion, eased into the second round as he won 6-3 6-4 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena.

After the match, the Swiss was interviewed on court by tennis legend John McEnroe.

And just as McEnroe attempted to ask Federer a question, a supporter in the crowd appeared to exclaim ‘I love you’.

Quick as a flash McEnroe replied: “Is that Rafa up there?”, referring to Federer’s on-court rival Rafael Nadal.

Cue a beaming Federer smile at the outpouring of emotion.

Federer, who will play Dan Evans in the second round, was able to tell McEnroe he was happy with his performance in his opening match.

Federer said: “It’s great to be back. Very happy with the match.

“I thought I brought good energy and played some good shots.

“I was solid overall because Denis made it tough. He serves well and is a good ball-striker.

“I’m just really happy to be as healthy as I am right now.

“It’s a thrill to be back.”
