Thierry Henry names 3 tips for Ballon d'Or – and Lionel Messi isn't among them

Thierry Henry has revealed his tips for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

The prize has been shared between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the last 10 years, although this season could be the first neither has won it since 2007.

Henry played with Messi at the start of the Argentine’s career at Barcelona but doesn’t see him in contention this time around.

And he doesn’t think Ronaldo is in the mix either despite firing Real Madrid to another Champions League success before leaving for Juventus .

Instead, he thinks it should go to one of France’s World Cup squad after their impressive success in Russia.

Speaking to Sky Sports , he said: “I think it would be a shame if a French player does not win the Ballon d’Or, apart from Eden Hazard because he was extraordinary at every Wold Cup match – defensively and on the counter-attack.

“But logically, a French player should win. Why not Varane? He won the Champions League, he was very strong.

“There is the alien (extra-terrestrial) Kylian Mbappe, and also Antoine Griezmann. But I can also mention many players.”

Henry will come up against Mbappe on Sunday when his struggling Monaco side take on Ligue 1 leaders PSG.

The youngster shot to stardom at Monaco and will hope to inflict misery on them on Sunday.

Henry added: “We have a star. He is an outstanding player and let’s be happy that he is in France

“I would have liked him to still be here at Monaco. The match (against PSG, this weekend) would have been easier for us.

“What can you say about Kylian Mbappe? Everyone talks about his dribbling, but I have always talked about his game intelligence at his age. I have rarely seen that.”
